Assignment 3
Questions (10 points each)
There are a total of 5 questions, but you only have to answer 3 of them to get 30 points total. Please try to get at least 100 words in for each answer. This is, after all, a writing class.
1) Pick a fairy tale that you are highly familiar with. What unexplained mysteries does it leave behind? What are your theories about these unexplained magical phenomena?
2) For those not familiar with her, Baba Yaga is a hideous old woman (often referred to as a witch) who in some accounts takes children and eats them. You can find very different tales about her online (Google’s your friend). Do you think these Baba Yaga stories are effective in getting children to behave? Why or why not?
3) How often will spells and enchantments play a part in your fairy tale? Will it be a crucial piece of plot device or will the Hero depend on less improbable things?
4) Creatures like unicorns, hobgoblins, firebirds, and dragons are all creatures of fairy tales. They are also creatures of magic. Do you think they were created because of magic? Or did magic come from them? Many people have differing opinions, so there's no wrong answer.
5) Do you prefer to read a fairy tale or listen to someone tell you about one? Why?

Extra Credit 3
Choose ONE(1) of the following options for extra credit:
a) Cause and Effect: The scene described in the lesson is a different depiction of what occurred between Rumplestiltskin and the poor farmer's/miller's daughter. In the original tales, the daughter agrees to give her firstborn in exchange for Rumplestiltskin's help in spinning the straw to gold. How do you think Rumplestiltskin gets this magic? Come up with a story of how the hobgoblin can spin straw into gold. (minimum 250 words)
b) Points of View: Take a fairy tale event (example: Sleeping Beauty’s pricking her finger or the three little pigs being attacked by the wolf) and interview three different characters about it. Ask them to tell you both what happened, in their own words, and how they feel about what happened. You can either work together with a few class members, or you can make up three different characters yourself. Be creative!
c) (Un)Happily Ever After: Draw your favorite fairy tale ending. This can be done via sketching, painting, or using a graphics program to draw. This must be your own original work! Please don’t use any images that aren’t yours.
d) Magicians Wanted: There’s a damsel in distress searching for a skilled enchanter or enchantress to break her curse. Create an ad graphic in the point of view of the damsel OR create an ad graphic trying to persuade the damsel into using your services.
For all images, please upload them to an image server (Photobucket, Flickr, ImageShack, etc.) and send the link in the email. I do not take attachments!
